Maximise your marks for Business A-level, AS & GCSE Exams
OUR AIM:
To improve your business exam grades. We have lots of experience doing this as teachers, examiners, trainers and teacher trainers.
We will do this by:
1 Clarifying what an examiner looks for when marking answers.
2 Teaching you how to structure your exam question answers.
3 Developing your skills to write concise answers that are mark-bearing.
4 Giving you real exam type examples.
5 Providing you with opportunities to practice and develop your skills.
It’s easier than you may think!
“You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.”
What we do and how we do it
What we do and how we do it
We are about supporting students to maximise marks to improve their grades. We are not magicians, soothsayers or providers of spells. BUT with a background in education, examining and marking, we have seen thousands of scripts and have substantial experience of identifying which student answers get marks and which do not and why.
We will share with you:
Common mistakes -
Not answering the question asked.
Answering the question asked but not meeting the grading criteria.
Writing everything you know about a question topic - long explicit definitions are not a good way to demonstrate knowledge. Knowledge is often implicit.
Not addressing the command word - Assess, Evaluate, Discuss, Analyse etc. Command words don’t have a ‘one approach fits all’ style of answer.
How you can save time by exploiting what you have written (analysis, evaluation). Why these opportunities are lost and how you can make sure you take them. Work smarter NOT harder.
How much to write - misconceptions about how long an answer needs to be. If structured properly, a response can be shorter than you may imagine. There is no such thing as a ‘three, four or six pager’. Balance arguments and conclusions not word counts.
You have THREE steps to take:
1 Dream it:
What grade do you aspire to get? Does this align with your predicted grades? Is there a gap? Do you understand why? Are you having trouble constructing answers which attract marks? A dream is just a dream until you start to imagine how to turn it into reality. That’s where we can help. Our focus is about helping you to understand that answering exam questions is a little bit like baking a cake; answers need to contain certain ingredients. The problem you face is that your answers may have too much of one ingredient and not enough of another.
2. Build it:
Develop skills that help you to get that grade. Exams test your ability to display knowledge and to think critically. The main problem here is, as with the cake example, there is often too much of the first ingredient and not enough of the second when students answer questions. To bake the perfect cake you need the right mix of ingredients. To get the best marks you need the right mix of knowledge, application, analysis and evaluation. Simple cakes require fewer ingredients than rich cakes.
3. Show it:
Make your answers mark laden. Many 2-3 mark questions require just knowledge and some application to business. Higher mark questions (5-20 or higher), need evidence that you can analyse and evaluate. This is what we will help you to do by demystifying what this involves, giving you examples and developing your confidence to display these skills in your answers. Understanding what the command words mean also helps you to decide what you need to do.
